New England Hurricane Season

survival outfits

A hurricane moves within 50 miles of southern New England every 13-18 years. The Hurricanes Bob & Carol were the last two hurricanes in New England to make landfall. Hurricane season in New England usually occurs from June to November, but it can start early. Make sure you are aware of the weather forecast so that you can take necessary precautions. Hurricanes can cause severe damage to property and lives. Here are some important things to remember when it comes to hurricane season.

Tropical storm Hanna

Hurricane season is upon us again and Tropical Cyclone Hanna is heading toward New England. The amazing picture of Hanna's wind speeds was captured by the satellite which is monitoring Hanna. It was taken on Aug. 29, 2008 This image shows the wind intensity as reflected by clouds and was taken around 14:15 UTC (10:33 AM EDT).

Today, the eye of Hanna is expected to pass over the eastern United States. It will then move northeastward into Mid-Atlantic. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, as well as flash flooding and isolated tornadoes. Additionally, the coast storm surge is expected to occur today along the Chesapeake Bay as well as Albemarle sound. As it passes to the northeast, the threat of coastal flooding will diminish.

Hanna has sustained winds of 60 mph or more. Hanna was about 305 mi northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, at latitude 20.3 nord and longitude 77.8 west. Hanna was traveling northward at 12 mph when it made its first landfall. However, it is expected to move northwest throughout the day. Its minimum pressure at the center is 1002 millibars.

Hurricane Bob

Hurricane Bob was one of the most destructive storms to hit New England during hurricane season. It caused considerable damage and killed 18. It caused significant damage to New England's southern coast, with a $1B damage bill. New England overall suffered $2.5B in damage. Although Hurricane Bob was not the last named hurricane to affect the area, Hurricane Edouard did make landfall at Nantucket in 1996.

Hurricane Bob struck Massachusetts near New Bedford and cut through Southeastern Massachusetts. In certain parts of the region, the storm dumped three to six inches worth of rain. Although it was a Category-3 hurricane, the storm produced winds over 75 mph, and ripped up coastlines. The storm surge was seven feet high in certain areas like Cape Cod. Many coastal towns were hit with damage and lost power.

Hurricane Bob was the second most powerful storm ever to hit New England during hurricane season. It reached its peak with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour (185 km/h). It caused widespread destruction and extensive damage to the region. In 1997, Bob was changed to Bill, and the Atlantic hurricane-season officially began.

Hurricane Carol

Hurricane Carol hit New England during hurricane season 2013. It produced high winds, a storm surge of over 14 feet and severe flooding. The storm caused major flooding in southern New England. It was particularly severe in New Bedford, Somerset and other areas. Hurricane Carol brought two to five inches of rain to the majority of the region. Northeasters saw up to six inches. Nearly 4,000 homes, boats, and vehicles were damaged as a result. The storm knocked out power in most of eastern Massachusetts.

Hurricane Carol experienced a weakening phase before it made landfall in the eastern United States. However, it quickly intensified as it moved north and northeastward. It passed Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on August 30, and was designated Category 2. Hurricane Carol's intensity was marked by sustained winds of 120 km/h for some areas, and gusts reaching up to 217 km/h for others.

FAQ

What is the most important item for survival?

Food is the most vital thing for survival. Shelter from the elements and food are also essential. If you don't eat, you won't live very long.

Why are basic survival skills important?

Basic survival skills include being able to shelter yourself, make fire, shelter, hunt and fish. These skills are essential no matter where we live, but they become even more critical when traveling alone or in remote areas.

These skills include self-defense, navigation and communication as well as wilderness medicine. These are life-saving skills that must be learned before you venture into the unknown.

While you may not have the time or resources to learn these skills, there are many other useful skills that could be of benefit. If you are planning to spend your vacation hiking in the mountains, you should learn mountaineering skills. If you plan to camp in the desert, you should learn how to survive in extreme temperatures. There are countless ways to prepare for any situation, so don't hesitate to think outside the box and consider learning new skills.

Why is it important to have basic survival skills?

While you might not always have access water or food, being prepared will ensure that you survive for longer.

It is important to learn how you can take care of others and yourself. You won't be able to cope with crisis situations if you don't learn how to do it.

These are skills everyone needs to have. These skills will ensure you are safe and healthy when camping.

You also need to know what you can expect from your environment. You might not be able use communication if you are in the middle of nothing.

If you don’t know what you are doing, you should start learning as quickly as you can.

If you are in imminent danger, you should seek help right away. But if you're not in immediate danger, it might be worth taking some time to gather information to determine what happened.

What is your most valuable survival tool in case you get lost?

The compass will tell you which direction north is. It also shows us how far we have traveled from our starting point. The compass may not always help you find your way if you're travelling to a mountainous area. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

You could also use a rock or a tree as a reference point if you don't own a compass. However, you can still use a landmark as a way to navigate but it will be easier to determine north.

How to Navigate Without a Compass, or with it?

A compass doesn't tell you where you are going, but it does help you find your way back home if you lose your bearings.

There are three options for navigation:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

You recognize landmarks when you see them. These include trees, buildings and rivers. Because they give you a visual clue about where you are, landmarks are very useful.

Magnetic North simply refers to the direction that the Earth's magnet field points. The sun appears to be moving across sky if you look up. However, the earth’s magnetic field actually causes it to move around the Earth. Although it appears that the sun is moving across the sky and around the horizon, it actually does so. At noon the sun is directly overhead. The sun is directly beneath you at midnight. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This means that your course could drift a lot in a single day.

Another method of navigating is using stars. Stars appear to rise and set over the horizon. These are fixed points in time that you can use for determining your location relative others.

How to Build a Fish Trap To Survive

A fish trap can be described as a device used to capture fish. It is made up of two parallel bars, the "trays", that form a funnel-shaped shape. The water flows into one trap end, which collects at the bottom of the first tray. This causes water levels to rise. The water level rises, and it eventually falls through the second barrier, allowing the fish to escape.

Fish traps are an ancient invention that was originally used to catch salmon. These traps still function today. However, they can also be used to catch freshwater catfish like bass and carp.

You can make your fish trap yourself if you have access to a large enough pond. For the trap's inside, you'll need to line it with some material. If you don’t have enough space, you can order a commercial fishtrap kit online. These kits usually come with everything you need except for the materials to construct the trap itself.

If you do decide to make your own fish trap, here are some things to keep in mind when building it:

  • To prevent water from leaking through the trap's sides, ensure they are strong.
  • So that the sun warms the water, choose a spot with plenty of sunshine.
  • Smooth surfaces like stone or concrete are best for trap bottoms. Sand and gravel particles will gravitate to uneven surfaces.
  • Keep the trap's area free from debris, so fish won't have any problems getting caught.

Once you've made the fish trap, it's time to place it around the pond's edge. You don't have to worry about the fish escaping. Just leave the trap alone for several days and they will start swimming in again. The trap shouldn't be cleaned as it should stay moist. If you notice dead fish around the pond you can easily remove them.
